Free to Design a Masterpiece

A public domain art print from Raw Pixel was printed and framed by Grant’s Frames. Grant’s Frames staff accentuated the art with stacked mats and custom mat openings and custom picture frame.

Ring in the new year with some new art! It sounds easy, and it is when you serendipitously stumble across the perfect artwork. But when you decide to go out looking for art it can feel as though you are embarking on an epic quest.

When shopping for art, don’t overlook your hometown. Annual festivals and local galleries, art cooperatives, boutiques, and even restaurants feature local artists with a wide range of styles and prices. If your local scene isn’t an option or doesn’t scratch your itch, it’s time to surf the internet.

The internet has opened the world of art and surface design to everybody. No matter your budget, you can find your ideal art. That perfect piece of art may resonate with your soul, shout your truth, soothe your demons, or simply evoke a smile. But where do you find this mystical piece of life-affirming art? Social media platforms are a great place to start. Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are home to innumerable artists who are seeking you, their audience. Use efficient search terms to find their artwork. (We’ll talk about search terms in a bit.) Etsy is an online marketplace for makers of all sorts and a great place to search! Try Behance to discover a new favorite artist. Have room in your budget for original art? Try Saatchi.

Intrigued by “FREE” art? As art ages and copyrights expire, some of this art enters the realm of Public Domain. With some online digging, you can discover global masterpieces available for download. This is where the fun really begins! Here at Grant’s Frames, we can download the chosen artwork, resize it, print it to art paper, canvas, or photo paper, and help you design a unique mat and frame combination. Go ahead, check out our favorite online source for downloadable art and consider the possibilities. www.rawpixel.com/public-domain

Ready to expand your search to include current art for sale? Search terms will be your friends. Search terms should include subject, media, and genre or style. Here are some examples, but this is not an exhaustive list.

Media: watercolor, acrylic paint, oil paint, pen and ink, charcoal, pastel, screenprint, vector art, digital art, photography, composite photography

Subject: animals, specific animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc), landscape, portrait, figurative, cityscape, sports, mountains, castles

Style/Genre: fantasy, surrealism, pop art, pop surrealism, superflat, impressionistic, abstract, cubist, psychedelic, art nouveau

Need a handy cheat-sheet to guide you through this process? We have created a postcard that includes websites and the steps you will take to go from screen to wall. You can pick one up in our store or view it on our website at this link

Have fun finding your art! If you are feeling especially bold and artsy, you can manipulate the art- change the colors, blend in other images, distort the subject. But that’s a topic for another day!

A classic combination of a still life in an ornate heavy frame.
